In this method of design, the steel remains ‘elastic’, that is to say that it never reaches yield stress with the factored load applied; or only reaches permitted stresses under unfactored working loads. This may sound good, but it leads to more expensive design; and can also lead to collapse if overloaded, unlike plastic design.
